Rhythmic contractions that take place in biological systems like uterus have brought out a lot of importance and analysis. The behavior of the uterus at the time of late pregnancy and close to labour needs to be implied. Scientists give a theoretical elucidation for the observed synchronized movement of the uterus during and just before labour. These synchronized movements in the uterus do not emerge from any central agency; instead they arise due to some electrophysiological alterations that take place in the uterus. Reason how these Rhythmic alterations are affecting the uterus can be known by taking the organization of the uterine tissue.

Uterine tissue is made up of electrically excitable smooth muscle cells as well as inactive cells linked by gap junctions that serve as electrical conductors. These gap junctions are keeping on increasing, both numerically as well as value of electrical conductance at late pregnancy. The correlation between this electrophysiological modifications and the tendency of the uterus to go into rhythmic contractions strongly indicate a prominent role of the association between the cells. The uterus is filled by a particular strength of intercellular interaction. This strength is greater step by step; the system goes through localized regions oscillating at different frequencies tune in to a single frequency but with a few local regions of passive. Further augmenting the strength makes the whole system to oscillate in a single wave.

A better understanding of the mechanism the uterus functions could go a long way in helping to palliate problems like preterm births.
